The Situation: Samantha recently retired and has a lavish lifestyle where she is living beyond her means. She is withdrawing a significant amount of income from her retirement account. At her current rate of withdrawal, she will run out of money to live in the next ten years.
Our Approach: We suggested to Samantha that she needs to engage in Financial Planning to understand where she is on her retirement goal and we projected the impact of her current withdrawal strategy.This enabled the space for a realistic conversation about her spending. To increase her retirement income,we proposed a call option strategy for a portion of her account, which would generate income for her monthly needs. We set up a strategy where she can withdraw a fixed amount every month. She reduced her withdrawal rate to minimize the amount of money drawn from her principal amount.
The Outcome: Samantha’s retirement account is able to sustain her for several years beyond the initial ten years. With minor adjustments to her lifestyle, Samantha has the peace of mind that she will not outlive her money.
